Shy people like us tend to believe that the road to finding out how to stop being shy will not only be rocky, but impassable. The fact of the matter is that shyness is like any other problem in life; it needs to be broken down and looked at form different angles. Then and only then will you see that the road is quite smooth, sure there is an occasional boulder in the road … but fortunately I am going to show you some techniques that will turn a boulder into a pebble!
How To Stop Being Shy Tip 1: Get into the habit
This tip is all about extending your comfort zone. As shy people we tend to not force ourselves to do things. This tip is all about doing the things you dont want to do … but doing a watered down version of it. For instance, when I first started finding out how to stop being shy, I knew that I would need to work on the fact that I never go out. If there was an opportunity to go out, I would make an excuse to stay home, not because of the event, but just because I would have to go out.
So I decided that every night I would go out and walk around. Sometimes I would even go out somewhere social. I didnt push myself to go to the social events, but if I felt confident enough I would. But my main goal was to just go out every night, even if it meant just walking around. After a while I got into the habit of always being ready to go out. Because I had done it for so many days, my brain and mind was used to it. Now if I didnt want to go out, it was because I genuinely didnt want to go out to whatever it was. Not because I was nervous to leave.
How To Stop Being Shy Tip 2: Be first to say Hi
This tip I discovered because of my brother. He once showed me that if you are the first to say hi to someone, that you are in control of the conversation. The fact that you initiate the conversation will instill a much needed feeling of confidence in yourself. It makes it much easier to end the conversation. Try it one day. If you see someone you know, or would like to know, and you dont normally initiate the conversation, do. Or just say hi, you dont need to have a conversation with them. Just say hi to a bunch of people.
How To Stop Being Shy Tip 3: Getting your mind ready before social contact
What this tip entails is you “priming” yourself before you socialize. So if you are going somewhere that is making you nervous, you would do something smaller first.
For instance you might go and talk to a grocery store clerk. Or you might start a conversation with someone less threatening. Its all about starting small and then going bigger. But this is being done on a daily basis. Not over a year, but each day.
